A Child Is Born

God’s chosen people
Longed for their Deliverer.
The days were dark;
Oppression filled the land.
Into this scene came
Holy Word who took on flesh,
And those with eyes to see,
Said of this Man:

A Child is born,
Beyond all our imaginings;
A Child is born,
Fulfilling prophecy.
And by His life,
The world will see the face of God;
And by His death,
We’ll be forgiven and set free.

The earth is tired;
Creation longs to be made new,
And likewise, we
Were made for more than this,
For in our hearts,
Lie pieces of eternity
To be awakened soon
With heaven’s kiss.

A Child is born,
Beyond our wildest hopes and dreams;
A Child is born,
Redeeming history.
And by His life,
The world has seen the face of God,
And by His death,
We’re forgiven and set free!

By His new life,
We’re forgiven and set free!
Set free.

A Child Is Born: A Christmas Worship Experience of the Christ-Light is now available!   The cantata, featuring music by Mary McDonald, lyrics by Laura, and orchestrations by Michael Lawrence, will premier this June in Fort Worth, TX.   To listen to samples or order the music for your church, click here and scroll down a bit.   SATB and SAB versions are available, as are orchestral parts, performance tracks, and rehearsal CDs.

Last year, Mary McDonald—Knoxville-based composer, arranger, publisher, concert pianist, church organist, and Laura's former piano teacher—turned an Advent hymn Laura wrote called "A Child Is Born" into an SATB choral anthem.   In addition to becoming one of Monarch Music's best-selling songs, "A Child Is Born" was selected by music distributor J.W. Pepper as an Editor's Choice for 2006.   To order or listen to the original anthem that inspired the Christmas cantata, click here.

On August 16, 2006, Laura made national TV appearances on Good Morning America and ABC Primetime!   The producers heard her NPR interview and decided to feature her as an example of an artist with synesthesia.   (Her favorite part of the experience was playing a 7-foot Steinway at the NYC studio.)   Click here to watch the Good Morning America YouTube video (which has briefer and different footage than the Primetime feature).

Laura's interview on NPR's Morning Edition was voted #12 among the NPR staff's "Memorable Moments of 2005"!   Her piano music and descriptions of synesthesia helped increase public awareness of this fascinating condition.   To hear the nation-wide broadcast, go here and click on the "Listen" button.

After hearing Laura on NPR, fellow Central High School graduate Leslie Wylie wrote a newspaper article about Laura's musical synesthesia for the Knoxville Metro Pulse.   Click here to read "Technicolor Sound."

Works in Progress....

Beauty Music & God is a curriculum that draws from the Bible and other literature, Church practice, psychology, cognitive science, pop culture, and personal experience to explore the place where creativity meets spirituality, where artists become ministers.   Whether in a classroom setting or as a weekend retreat, BM&G sessions are customized to engage participants’ interest while introducing them to new levels of thought and experience.   Ideal for workshops, choir retreats, college convocation programs, adult education courses, and Sunday School classes.   A BM&G book may also be in the works.

Curtain Calls is a Broadway-style musical chronicling two very different people who meet at a performing arts school in New York—an aspiring singer from small-town Indiana, and the son of the recently-deposed head of Estonia's formerly Communist government.   Its themes include the quest for authenticity, significance of place, moving forward to face the future, and (of course) love and longing.
